After the release of his 2013 debut album People Need Jah and the sophomore set Temporary Obstacle in 2019, reggae singer Milton Blake from Jamaica returns with his third full length album entitled Fend.

With the 12-track album Fend, Milton Blake delivers a very well put together and classy set. It’s actually a compilation of songs produced by the artist himself and other producers including Lloyd Dennis for Pick Out Records, Alvin Ricketts for Turbulence Int., and Jah Mikes for Reggae Vibes Productions. Riddimwise, those who favor and enjoy relicked versions of classic backdrops are served well with remakes of riddims such as The Heptones’ Party Time, Jimmy Riley & The Three Tops’ You Should Have Known, The Fugitives/Soul Agents’ The Lecture, and Peter Tosh’s Legalize It to name a few. With these riddims and a few not mentioned others, it’s obvious that Fend has a very clear leaning towards the old skool. Nothing wrong with that at all. Vocally, this is also a worthy collection as Milton Blake has a smooth and appealing voice that blends perfectly well with the riddims he rides. In all, Fend is a solid album throughtout with the highlights being Rub A Dub, Caan Trust Dem, title track Fend, the gorgeous Just A Song, and I Am Safe.

Two of the men are easily recognizable to reggae fans worldwide – Luciano and Mikey General, legendary singers, songwriters, and founders of Jah Messenjah productions. The third is less recognizable but has an equally strong presence. With a commanding authority and a very melodic voice he sings, Stop your fussin’ and fighting brother…

His sequence is short but it is instantly apparent that he is not a newcomer to the profession but a seasoned professional. His name is Milton Blake and his soon-to-be-released debut album should assuage questions of “Who’s that?” from international reggae fans.

Much of Blake’s lyrics focus on spiritual upliftment, black consciousness, “economic sufferation,” and having respect for humanity with the guidance of God (Jah). He affirms, “The process of my songwriting is to elevate others positively.” In fact, positivity is a theme that Blake expresses continuously in song and speech.

In contrast to the über-bravado of most reggae artists young and old, Blake seems more comfortable in humility both with how he conducts his inner and outer lives. “On a regular day,” he explains, “I get up and give praise to the Most High first, then in the kitchen to make breakfast, get my children off to school. Then it’s time for me to ready myself to go to the studio where I spend all my day.”

His raw, melodic voice follows in the footsteps of Bob Marley, Luciano, and Mikey General as well as Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown and Maxi Priest, all of whom Blake considers major influences on his career. His voice could be described as a mixture between Jah Cure’s sincerity and Dennis Brown’s clarity.

Blake is poised to make some noise! But it is his spiritual foundation and guidance through Jah that illuminates this talent. As he states in his aptly titled song Let Your Light Shine: Remember you are gone to a spiritual warfare Not against one another but deeper forces are there So don’t you ever take off your armor Just let your light shine before man That they may see Jah and glorify the father in Zion.

This song speaks about the state of the world.

There are not many Jamaican reggae artists in the United States Midwest, but Milton Blake has carried his country’s banner throughout that region for years. The Cleveland, Ohio-based singer recently released “Blatantly,” a hard-hitting social commentary that decries what he sees as a sad state of global affairs. It is produced by Lloyd Dennis for Pickout Records, an independent company based in the United Kingdom. “It’s really blatant to see how the leaders are treating us. We see people suffering here an’ there an’ prices are going up, and it’s really troubling the people, ” said Blake. He added that the single is “part of a bigger project” aimed at breaking him to a broader audience this year. In recent months, Blake has recorded profusely, resulting in a cover (with fellow singer Iyatunde) of Baby Come Back, Player’s classic soft rock ballad.

The bigger project he referred to is a probable album or EP, tentatively scheduled for release late this year. A committed Rastafarian, Blake lived for many years in Central Village, a rough community located near Spanish Town, the country’s first capital. Some of his early songs were produced by noted figures such as Dwight Pinkney (guitarist of the Roots Radics Band) and Philip “Fatis” Burrell of Xterminator Records. Blake migrated to the United States 15 years ago, and has recorded three albums to date. He has also performed throughout the Midwest and East Coast with his River Nile band.
